SEO Notes
Things that seem to HELP your websites...
I learned this stuff from searching the web and reading articles, playing with WebCEO, Listening to Cherie...duplicating what she did on the Xtream Members site pages and using the Google tools and the SEO Centro site and others (my C-panel for example).
Things I did:
- I put the main keywords in the title. Made the title shorter and removed as many "stop word" as I could. (and is a stop word)
- I used my C-panel SEO tool and optimized my index page for Description size, number of keywords and for key word density.
- I added an <h1> tag and another in an <h3> tag. These tags had some of my keywords.
- I added content with keywords at the bottom of the page.
- I reduced the number of keywords and focused mainly the first three. Making sure these 3 keywords were in the Title and the description also.
- I added formatting to the keywords in the content (bold, italic and size)
- I added the following robot tags...not sure if any of these helped but I know they don't hurt.
<meta name="msnbot" content="index, follow, all"> (This is the MSN Spyder)
<meta name="slurp" content="index, follow, all"> (This is the Yahoo spyder)
One site I have read alot of information on is :
Below is the link of The best and Worst practices they list for good SEO.
Many of the Good Practices...
Title Tag: +3
Have keywords in the Title. Near the beginning. Title should be short, 7 to 10 words. This is one of the most important places to have a keyword because what is written inside the <title> tag shows in search results as your page title.
Meta Tags:
Keywords: +1 - Less than 20 words and use words that are in the content.
Description: +1 - Remove the "stop words" if possible. Keep the Description relitive and 60 to 80 characters long.
URL: +3
Have keyword rich URLs and filenames. If not in the domain, have keywords in the URL sub link or filenames.
Density: +3
Keep the major keyword density from 3-7%. Minor keywords from 1-2%. Keyword density of over 10% is suspicious and looks more like keyword stuffing, than a naturally written text.
Headings: +3
Have keywords in a text heading <h1>, <h2, <h3>. One more place where keywords seem to count a lot.
Content Change: +3
Add new content when possible. Adding new content is better than making small changes to exsisting content.
Site Accesibility: +3
Check the site for errors . Sites or pages have broken links, 404 errors, password-protected areas or other similar issues, then the site simply can't be indexed.
Site Size: +2
The size of the site matters. Generally spiders love large sites so the bigger, the better.
SIte Age: +2
Generally older sites have more respect and are more trustworthy. They have been around and are here to stay.
Site Theme: +2
The theme is important because when it fits into one theme it boosts the rankings of all the pages that are related to the theme.
